Medicare is the federal health insurance program for Americans 65 and older — and for some people under 65 with qualifying disabilities. It was designed to make sure that after a lifetime of work, you have access to quality healthcare without breaking the bank.
But here’s what most people don’t realize: Medicare isn’t one single plan. It’s a system with multiple parts, multiple choices, and enrollment windows that — if you miss them — can cost you money for the rest of your life.
That’s where having a licensed Medicare specialist in your corner makes all the difference.
The 4 Parts of Medicare — Explained Simply
Hospital Insurance
Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care. Most people pay $0 in premiums for Part A if they worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.
Medical Insurance
Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical equipment. Part B has a monthly premium and a deductible. Missing your enrollment window triggers a lifetime penalty.
Medicare Advantage
An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurers. Must cover everything Parts A and B cover. Most plans include drug coverage and many offer $0 premiums plus dental, vision, and hearing.
Prescription Drug Coverage
Standalone drug plans that work alongside Original Medicare, or built into Medicare Advantage plans. Coverage and costs vary by plan. Choosing the wrong Part D plan can cost you hundreds more per year than necessary.
Don’t Miss Your Medicare Enrollment Window
Missing your enrollment window isn’t just an inconvenience — it can mean paying a penalty every single month for the rest of your life.
Initial Enrollment Period
A 7-month window beginning 3 months before your 65th birthday month, including your birthday month, and ending 3 months after. Your primary opportunity to enroll without penalty.
General Enrollment Period
January 1 – March 31 each year. For people who missed their IEP. Coverage begins July 1. Late enrollment penalties may apply.
Annual Enrollment Period
October 15 – December 7 each year. When you can switch, drop, or join Medicare Advantage or Part D plans for the following year.
Special Enrollment Period
If you have employer coverage past 65, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period when that coverage ends — allowing you to enroll without penalty.

Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement — What’s the Difference?
Medicare Advantage
Replaces Original Medicare. You use the plan’s network of doctors and hospitals. Most plans include drug coverage, dental, vision, and hearing. Usually $0 or low monthly premium but you pay copays when you use services.
Medicare Supplement
Works alongside Original Medicare to cover the gaps — deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. See any Medicare-accepting doctor in the country. Higher monthly premium but very low out-of-pocket costs when you need care.
Part D Drug Plan
Standalone plan that covers your medications. Plan formularies vary — choosing the right one based on your specific prescriptions can save you significant money every year.

Medicare Questions Sean Hears Every Day
Can I keep my current doctor with Medicare?
It depends on the plan you choose. With Original Medicare plus a Supplement, you can see any doctor in the country who accepts Medicare. With Medicare Advantage, you’ll typically need to use the plan’s network. Sean always checks your doctors before recommending a plan.
When should I sign up for Medicare?
For most people, the answer is during your Initial Enrollment Period — the 7-month window around your 65th birthday. If you have employer coverage, the answer may be different. Getting this wrong can mean lifetime penalties.
Does Medicare cover dental, vision, and hearing?
Original Medicare does not cover routine dental, vision, or hearing. Many Medicare Advantage plans do include these benefits — this can be a strong reason to consider Medicare Advantage depending on your situation.
What if I’m still working at 65?
If you have employer health insurance through your job or your spouse’s job, you may be able to delay Medicare enrollment without penalty. Sean can help you understand exactly when and how to make the switch.
How much does Medicare cost?
Part A is free for most people. Part B has a standard monthly premium. Medicare Advantage plans often have $0 premiums. Supplement plans vary by plan and carrier. Sean will walk you through the full cost picture for your specific situation.
